We poms may be a good 10, miles away from the white sands of Bondi, but our cousins from Down Under have taught Londoners well in the ways of Australian bar culture. From pubs to party places, wine bars to cocktail spots these are the best bars for finding a slice of Australian sunshine in London. For fully-pumped Aussie fun, The Slug is the place to go. The Fulham bar is a home-from-home for Australians, Kiwis and South Africans, with live sports and themed party nights at its southern hemisphere-led heart.

Down Under shenanigans happen all year round with Bogan Bingo hosting an evening of snakebite and all round silliness every Thursday. This coffee shop and lunch spot turns into a cocktail bar in the evening, serving up a mean espresso martini with London-based Square Mile coffee and Australia-hailing Mr Black coffee liqueur. Australian craft beers also take centre stage here, with a signature kimchi and cheese toastie available in the evening to soak up your beverage exploration. This might sound like an unlikely addition to the list, but Clapham nightclub Infernos is a veritable nerve centre for Australian party fellas and sheilas — even Hollywood star Margot Robbie has confessed her love for the club.

This cafe loves Australian coastal culture so much, it even named itself after a secluded beach that overlooks Sydney Harbour. Again, brunch and coffee is the name of the game by day, but night time sees the light and bright spot turn into a chic natural wine bar.

My Aussie and I have been together for 5 years now. So, ya, a long long time. Nothing bad, but just different. It may be a culture thing or the whole “you always want what you can’t have” thing, but I absolutely love dating an Aussie. The author would like to thank Dr James Jupp and colleagues Dr Luke Buckmaster and Dr Mark Rodrigues for their insightful comments and assistance in the preparation of this paper. From its genesis as a policy framework to respond to the needs of immigrants, multiculturalism became a concept that articulated the character of the growing ethno-cultural diversity of society in the latter decades of the twentieth century.

Always contested, multiculturalism and the ethno-cultural diversity that it symbolises have become increasingly controversial and subject to scrutiny in response to the security and social challenges of the early twenty-first century. This paper provides an overview of Australia’s federal multicultural policies, briefly draws attention to state and territory multicultural policy frameworks, and reviews some key issues in recent public debates about multiculturalism in Australia and overseas, with a focus on post-immigration multiculturalism.

Part One of the paper reviews the evolution of Australia’s federal multicultural policies between their introduction in the s up to the period of the federal election. It is largely descriptive and is intended to identify key policy statements and reports surrounding government policy statements. Part Two of the paper highlights prominent issues in public debates about multiculturalism and ethno-cultural diversity through a review of relevant literature and media commentary.

The discussion focuses on issues in public debates in the last ten years, because—while the challenges of the past decade may, in many cases, have roots in the policies, practices and issues of previous decades—the events and concerns catalysing public debate in the past decade have profoundly changed the way in which society has engaged with the concept of multiculturalism. Part Two broadens the discussion of multiculturalism beyond Australia in recognition of the fact that the issues, events, and even rhetoric, that have animated Australian debates about multiculturalism, particularly in the past ten years, transcend national borders and have reverberated in various forms in other parts of the world.

While there continue to be significant differences amongst the countries discussed there are also some interesting parallels. As global migration increases in scale and complexity Australia is one among many nations that are faced with the challenges of responding effectively and imaginatively to the increasing diversity of contemporary societies.
